Gay college president.....

So tonight I was on this great vibe from my 10% club meeting and decided to peruse through the Advocate which I frequently do and I found this...Enjoy :)

So tonight we were talking about the percentage of people that are gay, and how the numbers are so skewed that nobody can really say there are X amount of GLBT in the US. One of the areas we talked about was in the acidemia. It is believed that between 3-5 percent of the entire GLBT population are educated. From my stand point I could definatly see this, more now then in the past but its definatly there. Also from my stance I believe the people the are most accepting are educated. Education opens your mind to many different networks, for whatever you believe in or support you can usually find a group of people that agree with you.
From here my mind floats to our part of the country, and the question of 'Could an openly gay person become a university president, or even anyone of high status?' Sadly, I don't think it could happen in our area of the country. We have no doubt come a long way to becoming more accepting of homosexuality, but there is a lot of room for improvement. I would hope that in the future people would accept it and realize gay people are just that, people. The same as anyone else, they just happen to sleep with a member of the same sex.
Also in this article they discuss how many places have 'glass ceilings' for gay people. This makes me think about when Coco-Cola was sued because it was found out that they had a glass celing for African Amercians. This was deemed illegal because its in violation of the civil rights act. In many universities, and even in many states you can be fired one the sole basis of you are gay. In the world of academia this has imporved in the last decade, in fact our own university includes sexual orientation in their antidiscrimination policy. Also, most Fortune 500 companies include sexual orientation and gender identity in their antidiscrimination policies, and some go as far to offer health coverage to same sex partners. My only wish is that in my lifetime the country adopts this philosophy and realizes we are just people, the same as everyone else.

What's Killing Congress???

http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0907/5814.html
So reading through the politico this morning, and i came across a very interesting article that jogged my memory.
Ok the first thing that caught my eye was the title, Deadliest Congress in Decades. Ok honestly, my first thought was 'I bet its all democrats and I bet its stress from the Bush Administration that is pushing them over the edge.' Ok, truth be told there was only one democrat, and they all died of things that are pretty well explainable. Two died from some sort of cancer, one died of leukemia, and the last died from falling down the stairs.
I am not sure why I found this article so interesting but in the end I did learn alot. People never really wonder what has happened to congressmen over the past years, and this article discussed all the deaths throughout history. I found it suprising that so many congressmen committed suicide, but if you look at what was going on during that time its completly understandable.

Antigay Leader Dies

http://www.advocate.com/news_detail_ektid48695.asp
So I was perusing through the Advocate today and found this article rather interesting. The article is about religious leader Rev. D James Kennedy's passing Wednesday. this man, although not as popular as James Dobson, had much of the same ideals. He preached to his congragation about evanglizing every part of thier lives as well as the condemnation of homosexuality and abortion.
So this is why I found this interesting. With the political climate against the GLBT community people like this are very influential. People are looking to their religious leaders and trying to decide what to do, who to vote for, and what to believe. While this can be good, it can also be very bad. People have shown very clearly that they get lazy when it comes to civic engagement and if they only listen to whatever their religious figures say and don't think about it for themselves there can be alot of trouble. This case is especially true for the GLBT community. There are many religious leaders that condem homosexuality saying its immoral and unnatural. I believe its the fear of the unknown that they ultimatly say this. Yes I am a religious person, but I believe the Bible is open to much interpretation. My personal beliefs are it is not a choice to be homosexual just like its not a choice to be heterosexual. God made me this way and I do not question that. I know that is just me, and other people interepret it differently and there isn't anything I can do about that. In these cases I get rather aggraviated because they are excluding me. This all comes after a Republican debate where they discussed the Federal Marriage Amendment. Now this really REALLY makes me mad, because they are openly discriminating agianst Americans. This should not happen, but if people continue to just blindly listen to their religious leaders and don't do research themselves then I can definatly see this happening.
